HL Deb 25 May 1949 vol 162 c1075

2.35 p.m.

LORD SHEPHERD

My Lords, in moving the Motion which stands on the Order Paper in the name of my noble friend the Leader of the House, may I say that we propose to meet the general wish of your Lordships by applying the powers given to us by this Motion, if your Lordships agree to it, and to postpone the Second Reading of the British Film Institute Bill until after the conclusion of the adjourned debate on the Iron and Steel Bill? We shall, of course, not use these powers except after consultation through the usual channels. I beg to move.

Moved, That Standing Orders Nos. XXI and XXXIX be considered in order to their being suspended until the House adjourns for the Recess at Whitsuntide, and that Government business have, except with the consent of the Government, precedence over other Notices and Orders of the Day.—(Lord Shepherd.)

On Question, Motion agreed to, and ordered accordingly.
