HL Deb 15 December 1949 vol 165 c1639

Clause 10, page 7, line 40, leave out ("seventy-five") and insert ("sixty-five").

THE LORD CHANCELLOR

My Lords, this reduces from 75,000 to 65,000 the population qualifying a non-county borough to apply for a separate commission of the peace. There are five of them. What it comes to is this. Your Lordships remember that we had 75,000, and under that basis there were three. By reducing it to 65,000 it includes Stockton-on-Tees, Newcastle-under-Lyme, Hove, Swindon and Chesterfield. This again was a concession which obviously had to be made. I beg to move.

Moved, That this House do agree with the Commons in the said Amendment.— (The Lord Chancellor.)

LORD LLEWELLIN

My Lords, it does not necessarily mean that all these will get it?

THE LORD CHANCELLOR

Not at all.

LORD LLEWELLIN

They can only apply, and I hope that we shall not go far to increase the separate commissions of the peace at this time, because I think the fewer new commissions there are the better.

On Question, Motion agreed to.
