HL Deb 27 March 1947 vol 146 c881
THE LORD CHANCELLOR

My Lords, may I rise on a point of personal explanation and make a statement with regard to what is attributed to me in the OFFICIAL REPORT of a speech which I made yesterday? On February 13, the most reverend Primate, the Archbishop of York, in a debate in your Lordships' House, said this: I know from experience that the exhortatory sermon is out of date. In my speech yesterday I reminded your Lordships of that statement, and this is what is attributed to me: The most reverend Primate, the Archbishop of York, told us the other day that sermons have had their day… I have spent a considerable, though not an undue time, listening to sermons, and the most reverend Primate has spent a great deal of time in delivering them. I should be very sorry to think that, in the unlikely event of any one reading the report of my speech, it might be deemed that I thought that sermons had had their day; and I should be still more sorry if it were thought that I could attribute such a sentiment to the most reverend Primate.
