HL Deb 16 December 1947 vol 153 cc236-7
LORD LLEWELLIN

My Lords, in the hope that I shall receive a more satisfactory reply to this question, I beg to ask the second question standing in my name on the Order Paper.

The question was as follows:

[To ask His Majesty's Government, what are the additional numbers of dwelling houses estimated by the National Coal Board to be necessary properly to house the persons necessary for full production of coal.]

LORD HENDERSON

My Lords, in response to the Government's request in July, 1947, the National Coal Board drew up a list of places where the provision of houses could produce an immediate return in the shape of additional coal. This list covered fifty local authority areas and showed the total requirement in those areas to be 4,965 houses.

LORD LLEWELLIN

I am obliged to the noble Lord for his reply. Although completely dissatisfied with his previous answer, I congratulate him on the way in which he handled his bat despite the barracking. I hope we shall have as satisfactory a reply on agriculture as we have had on this question, because it is just as important.
