HL Deb 09 December 1947 vol 153 cc2-3
THE Marquess of READING

My Lords, I beg leave to ask the question standing in my name on the Order Paper. [The question was as follows:

To ask His Majesty's Government whether any and, if so, what restriction is placed upon the number of food parcels from outside the United Kingdom that may be delivered to any one addressee over a period of time: and if so, under what authority such restriction is imposed and what instructions have been given as to the method of dealing with undelivered parcels.]

Lord CHORLEY

My Lords, there is no limit to the number of gift parcels which any person may receive from abroad, or to the frequency of receipt, provided each parcel is a bona-fide unsolicited gift, not imported as merchandise or for sale, is clearly marked as a gift, and does not exceed in weight 22 lb. gross. Any parcels not complying with these conditions may be seized by the Customs and handed over to the Ministry of Food Salvage Officer for disposal.

The Marquess of READING

While thanking the noble Lord for his answer, may I ask him this? If I give him particulars of a case of persons in Australia sending parcels to their family in this country and receiving thanks from a German in Germany, will he have it inquired into?

Lord CHORLEY

I would be very-glad to do so in such an interesting case.
