HL Deb 17 April 1946 vol 140 cc905-7

4.35 p.m.

LORD HATHERTON

My Lords, I beg to ask the question standing in my name.

[The question was as follows:

To ask His Majesty's Government, the number of officers—Regular and non-Regular—of the three Armed Services, who have applied for employment at the Ministry of Labour's Appointments Office in London, and the number in each category for whom employment has been found by the London Appointments Office up to the 1st March or later convenient date; and the like information as to each of the provincial Appointments Offices of the Ministry of Labour; and how many of the above-mentioned registrants were in employment but seeking other employment at the time of registration.]

LORD NATHAN

My Lords, during the period May 1, 1945, to April, 8, 1946, 3,393 Regular officers and 9,187 non-Regular officers (the latter figure including women) of the three Armed Services registered for employment at the London Appointments Office and at the latter date 1,124 Regular officers and 2,441 non-Regular officers were recorded as unemployed. During this period, 478 Regular officers and 826 non-Regular officers were placed in employment. As regards the twelve Provincial Appointments Offices, 3,890 Regular officers and 11,049 non-Regular officers (including women) registered for employment during the period in question and on April 8, 1946, 1,400 Regular officers and 3,299 non-Regular officers were recorded as unemployed at these offices. Between May 1, 1945, and April 8, 1946, 416 Regular and 966 non-Regular officers were placed in employment

Information is not available showing the numbers of applicants who were in employment at the time of registration, but of the 3,878 Regular and 10,530 non-Regular officers registered at Appointments Offices on April 8, 1946, 1,354 Regular officers and 4,790 non-Regular officers were in employment but were seeking other employment. I propose, with the noble Lord's permission, to furnish for the Official Report a tabular statement setting forth these figures with greater particularity.
