HL Deb 17 October 1939 vol 114 cc1440-2

4.26 p.m.

THE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR INDIA AND BURMA (THE MARQUESS OF ZETLAND)

My Lords, in connection with the business of your Lordships' House, I desire to inform your Lordships that I have this afternoon circulated to you a White Paper which contains a statement which is being made by the Viceroy of India to the Indian people and which should appear in the Press of India and of this country to-morrow morning. I understand that the noble Lord, the Leader of the Opposition, is asking a question to-morrow and putting down a Motion for Papers. In those circumstances I shall be glad to explain to your Lordships the circumstances in which the Viceroy's statement has been made.

THE LORD PRESIDENT OF THE COUNCIL (EARL STANHOPE)

My Lords, the judicial members of your Lordships' House have been good enough to arrange that it will be possible for us to meet at three o'clock to-morrow afternoon instead of half-past three. Therefore I propose that we should adjourn now till three o'clock to-morrow. The first business should be the discussion on the Indian matters which has just been referred to to by the Secretary of State, followed by the usual weekly Government statement. That I think is all the business that there is to-morrow, because I understand that the Motion on the Paper by the Earl of Midleton relating to the Ministry of Information has been adjourned.

House adjourned at twenty-seven minutes past four o'clock.
