HL Deb 30 March 1939 vol 112 c570
LORD SNELL

My Lords, I beg to ask the noble Marquess if he can make any statement on the future business of the House?

THE MARQUESS OF ZETLAND

My Lords, in reply to the noble Lord, I have to say that we propose that the House should meet for public business on Monday next at half-past three in order to give the Foreign Secretary an opportunity of making a statement on the foreign situation—if, that is to say, he should then be in a position to do so. It is not proposed that there should be any business on the Paper on Monday. On Tuesday I understand that, in the event of the Foreign Secretary having been able to make a statement the previous day, the noble Lord, Lord Snell, may wish to initiate a debate on foreign affairs. On Wednesday there is to be a debate on Lord Buckmaster's Motion on compulsory national, including military, service. On Thursday we propose to meet at eleven o'clock in the morning before adjourning for the Easter Recess.

LORD SNELL

I do not know whether the noble Marquess could tell us what time we are likely to meet on Tuesday; and also if he could tell us something about the date of reassembly after Easter.

THE MARQUESS OF ZETLAND

I understand that it will be possible for us to meet at three o'clock on Tuesday, but perhaps it would be better to wait until we know a little more nearly what the character of the business is likely to be on Tuesday and what number of speakers there are likely to be, before the actual time of meeting on that day is determined. With regard to the second question which the noble Lord asked me, I am afraid at the moment I am not in a position to give any definite answer as to how long we shall adjourn for.

House adjourned at twenty-two minutes past six o'clock.
