HL Deb 08 March 1939 vol 112 c76
THE FIRST LORD OF THE ADMIRALTY (EARL STANHOPE)

My Lords, it may be for the convenience of your Lordships if I refer very briefly to the course of business which is proposed for next week. On Tuesday, we propose to take the Second Reading of the Cancer Bill, which was read a first time to-day. As your Lordships know, on Wednesday there is a Motion by the noble and gallant Viscount, Lord Trenchard, on Defence matters, followed next day, Thursday, by the Second Reading of the Defence Loans Bill. I suggest, therefore, it might be for the convenience of the House if those who wish to speak on Defence matters spoke on the Motion by Lord Trenchard and those who wish to speak on the financial side of Defence confined themselves to Thursday's debate. Wednesday would therefore be for Defence matters, and Thursday for the financial side of Defence, thereby arranging that we do not get the debate spreading over a very wide area on each day, which perhaps would be less satisfactory to all of us. Of course that will not prevent any of your Lordships speaking on Defence matters on Thursday. I only suggest, for the convenience of the House, that we should try to divide the debate in the way suggested.

House adjourned at a quarter past five o'clock.
