HL Deb 30 April 1936 vol 100 cc737-8

THE UNDER-SECRETARY OF STATE FOR WAR (LORD STRATHCONA AND MOUNT ROYAL) rose to move, That an humble Address be presented to His Majesty, praying His Majesty to make an Order in Council under the Military Manoeœuvres Acts, 1897 and 1911, a draft of which was presented to this House on the 11th day of February last. The noble Lord said: My Lords, this Resolution is in the usual terms, and, if it is agreed to, the draft Order will be laid before His Majesty in Council as soon as possible after the King's reply to the Address is received. It is proposed to apply the Manoeuvres Acts for a period of three calendar months from 15th July over an area comprising parts of Surrey and Sussex, the major portion of the area being in Sussex. The 1st Cavalry Brigade, 1st and 2nd Divisions of the Aldershot Command, and the 10th and 12th Infantry Brigades from Shorncliffe and Dover respectively, will train in this area during the period 27th July to 19th September. No tanks will take part in this training, as the 1st Tank Brigade will train on Salisbury Plain, but the Royal Air Force will co-operate. In August the 2nd Division will carry out an exercise set by the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Aldershot Command. The 1st Division, in conjunction with the 1st Cavalry Brigade, the 12th Infantry Brigade and attached troops, will take part in an exercise directed by the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Aldershot Command, between 14th and 19th September. Approximately 20,000 troops will train in the manoeuvre area. I think it will be for the convenience of your Lordships if I state that a map showing the manoeuvre area has been placed in the Library and copies of the draft Order in Council are available for noble Lords in the Vote Office. I beg to move.

Moved, That an humble Address be presented to His Majesty, praying His Majesty to make an Order in Council under the, Military Manoeuvres Acts, 1897 and 1911, a draft of which was presented to this House on the 11th day of February last.—(Lord Strathcona and Mount Royal.)

On Question, Motion agreed to, and ordered accordingly: the said Address to be presented to His Majesty by the Lords with White Staves.
