HL Deb 30 May 1933 vol 87 c1110

Amendment reported (according to Order).

Clause 5:

Saving for certain county officers.

(2) The offices to which this section applies are the offices of clerk of the peace of it county, deputy clerk of the peace of a county, clerk of a county council, deputy clerk of a county council, and clerk of the lieutenancy, and any other office connected with the administration of the county to which a person has, whilst holding any of I he offices above mentioned, been appointed by the Court of Quarter Sessions or the county council or a joint committee of the Court of Quarter Sessions and the county council, or a committee of either of them.

LORD BAYFORDmoved, in subsection (2), after "deputy clerk of a county council," to insert "clerk to the visiting committee of a mental hospital." The noble Lord said: My Lords, these particular officials appear to be left out of the provisions of Clause 5 and they desire to be put in. They brought their case before the County Councils Association, who have looked into the matter and asked me to bring the matter forward on the Report stage of the Bill. I beg to move.

Amendment moved— Page 3, line 13, after ("council") insert ("clerk to the visiting committee of a mental hospital").—(Lord Bayford.)

LORD HANWORT

My Lords, as I am in charge of the Bill I will say that I accept the Amendment, subject to this, that I think the matter ought to be looked into with a view to further consideration on the Third Reading. My own opinion is that the person now to be inserted in the Bill in particular is already covered by general words, and I am not quite certain that the words of the Amendment are suitable. Lord Bayford assures me that they are, and on his undertaking I am ready to accept them.

On Question, Amendment agreed to.
