HL Deb 24 July 1931 vol 81 cc1155-8
EARL DE LA WARR

My Lords, I beg to move that the House do now adjourn until Monday next at 3 o'clock.

Moved, That the House do now adjourn till Monday next at 3 o'clock.—(Earl De La Warr.)

VISCOUNT HAILSHAM

My Lords, I do not know whether the noble Earl can state when the Report stage of this Bill will be taken.

EARL DE LA WARR

On Tuesday.

VISCOUNT HAILSHAM

I do not know whether the noble Earl can give us any more information as to one or two other agricultural measures in which he is interested and which, I suppose, will be coming before us some day next week. I should very much like to know about the Agricultural Land (Utilisation) Bill.

EARL DE LA WARR

It is proposed to take the Commons Amendments to the Improvement of Live Stock Bill on Monday, the next stage of the Agricultural Marketing Bill on Tuesday and the Commons Amendments to the Agricultural Land (Utilisation) Bill after that.

VISCOUNT HAILSHAM

On the same day?

EARL DE LA WARR

Yes, and the Small Landholders and Agricultural Holdings (Scotland) Bill too. It is first on the Order Paper for that day.

VISCOUNT HAILSHAM

As we are going to have a field day on Tuesday on these agricultural topics, might it not be advisable to meet at three o'clock on that day? I only ask because it is convenient that we should be informed of it as soon as possible so that noble Lords can make their arrangements.

EARL DE LA WARR

I think that was anticipated.

LORD HASTINGS

Might I ask whether it would be possible for the Improvement of Live Stock Bill to be taken off the early part of the Order Paper on Monday and put down later, as I find it impossible to be in the House before a quarter past five on that day?

EARL DE LA WARR

I think it would be necessary to suspend the Standing Orders to do that, but if the House raises no objection—

LORD HASTINGS

Its appearance in the early part of the Order Paper is surely fortuitous and it would be just as easy to put it down later without suspending Standing Orders, would it not?

VISCOUNT HAILSHAM

I think there is a difficulty about doing that without suspending Standing Orders. We are making our arrangements at rather short notice and under considerable pressure, and I think it would be for the convenience of noble Lords who are interested in a particular Bill to take it at a time convenient to them and to suspend Standing Orders for the purpose. The only thing is that Notice must be given.

EARL DE LA WARR

I will consider that. I do not think there would be any objection from our side of the House.

VISCOUNT HAILSHAM

It is only in order to arrange what must be a rather heavy week so as to meet the convenience of as many of their Lordships as possible. It is obvious that there will be conflicting interests, as there always is.

THE UNDER-SECRETARY OF STATE FOR WAR (LORD MARLEY)

My Lords, in all probability it would suit the convenience of the House to suspend Standing Order No. XXI and to put the Improvement of Live Stock Bill lower down on the Paper in view of the debate which we are having on the Unemployment Insurance (No. 3) Bill.

On Question, Motion agreed to.

House adjourned at a quarter before two o'clock.
