HL Deb 07 May 1918 vol 29 c951
VISCOUNT HALDANE

My Lords, there are two electric lighting Bills—the County of London Electric Supply Bill [H.L.], and the Yorkshire Electric Power Bill [H.L.]—down for Third Reading to-day, but for to-morrow there is on the Paper a Notice in the name of Lord Muir Mackenzie, who proposes to ask a question as to the policy of the Government with regard to this class of Bill generally, having regard to recent Reports of Committees on the subject. I suggest that it would be convenient to postpone the Third Reading of these two Bills until to-morrow, so that we might consider the whole matter then instead of having two discussions.

THE ACTING CHAIRMAN OF COMMITTEES (THE EARL OF KINTORE)

My Lords, I am inclined to agree with the noble Viscount; and as there is a general discussion to he raised to-morrow on the question of granting large powers to private companies for electrical purposes, considering that the Government may have in view proposals of a larger and more general character, I am willing to postpone the Third Reading of these two Bills as suggested.

LORD MUIR MACKENZIE

My Lords, I was not aware, when I put down the Notice for to-morrow with reference to the Bill—the Shropshire, Worcestershire, amid Staffordshire Electric Power Bill [H.L.]—which I had had an opportunity of seeing, that there were other Bills of the same character coming before your Lordships' House; otherwise I would have spoken to the Lord Chairman and arranged matters more conveniently. I am glad that he agrees to postpone these two Bills until to-morrow.
