HL Deb 14 September 1909 vol 2 c1134

Order of the Day for the House to be put into Committee, read.

Moved, That the House do now resolve itself into Committee.—(Lord Lovat.)

On Question, Motion agreed to.

House in Committee accordingly.

[THE EARL OF ONSLOW in the Chair.]

Clauses 1 to 7 agreed to.

Clause 8:

LORD SALTOUN moved to leave out Clause 8, which ran— 8. The provisions of the Act of 1886, relative to the enlargement of holdings, are hereby extended to an application for enlargement of a holding by a single crofter, or two or more crofters, and shall apply in the case of an application by a single crofter, as nearly as may be in the same manner and to the same effect as in the case of an application by two or more crofters. At present, under the Crofters Act of 1886, crofters under certain conditions of leases, rents, and so forth, had power of applying in groups of five for an extension of their crofts. The Bill of his noble friend enabled one crofter to apply for extension of his croft. It was felt that it would be a considerable grievance to certain tenants if single crofters could at any time apply for an extension of their crofts. He therefore proposed to leave the law as it was, and he hoped his noble friend would accept the Amendment.

Amendment moved— To leave out Clause 8."—(Lord Saltoun.)

LORD LOVAT accepted the Amendment.

On Question, Amendment agreed to.

Remaining clauses agreed to.

Standing Committee negatived: The Report of the Amendment to be received To-morrow, and Bill to be printed as amended. (No. 172.)
