HL Deb 17 November 1909 vol 4 cc603-4

Order of the Day for the House to be put into Committee, read.

Moved, That the House do now resolve itself into Committee.—(Lord Denman.)

On Question, Motion agreed to.

House in Committee accordingly.

[LORD BALFOUR OF BURLEIGH in the Chair.]

Clauses 1 and 2 agreed to.

Clause 3: 3.—(1) This Act may be cited as the Naval Discipline Act, 1909. (2) This Act shall come into force on the first day of January nineteen hundred and eleven.

LORD DENMAN

My Lords, there are two Amendments on the Paper which I beg to move on behalf of my noble friend Lord Granard. They are not of an important character, but are designed to bring the operation of the Act into force on such day or days not being later than the first day of January, 1911, as the Admiralty may appoint. Amendments of this character were pressed on the Government in another place which they were unable to accept. They have, however, in the Amendments which I now move gone as far as possible to meet those who wish this Act to come into operation earlier than the date originally fixed. I trust the House, therefore, will accept the Amendments.

Amendments moved— Clause 3, page 2, line 25, after ("on") insert ("such clay or days not being later than") Clause 3, page 2, line 26, after ("eleven") insert ("as the Admiralty may appoint, and the Admiralty may appoint different days for different places and stations, and for different provisions of this Act")—(Lord Denman.)

On Question, Amendments agreed to.

Clause 3, as amended, agreed to.

Standing Committee negatived: The Report of Amendments to be received on Friday next, and Bill to be printed as amended. (No. 226.)
