HL Deb 14 May 1907 vol 174 cc763-4
LORD AVEBURY

My Lords, in the absence of my noble friend Lord Courtney of Penwith, I beg to move the Motion standing in his name on the Paper.

Moved, That the following Lords be named of the Select Committee—

E. Hardwicke. L. Ampthill.
E. Cathcart. L. Avebury.
E. Beauchamp. L. Haversham.
L. Colchester. L. Pirrie.
L. Monteagle of Brandon. L. Courtney of Penwith.
L. Belper. L. Allendale.
—(Lord Avebury.)
THE MARQUESS OF LANSDOWNE

I had been given to understand that one of the right rev. Prelates desired to serve on this Committee. The suggestion seemed an excellent one, and if that desire is still felt on the Episcopal Bench we might substitute the name of a Bishop for one of the names in the Motion.

THE MARQUESS OF RIPON

The only difficulty is that Lord Courtney is not here. It is his Motion and his Committee.

THE MARQUESS OF LANSDOWNE

But he has placed himself in Lord Avebury's hands.

LORD AVEBURY

I speak for my noble friend, and I am quite prepared to move the Motion without the name of Lord Pirrie. The name of a right rev. Prelate could be added at a subsequent stage.

On Question, Motion, as amended, agreed to, and the Lords following were named of the Select Committee—

E. Hardwicke. L. Ampthill.
E. Cathcart. L. Avebury.
E. Beauchamp. L. Haversham.
L. Colchester. L. Courtney of Penwith.
L. Monteagle of Brandon L. Allendale.
L. Belper.

The Committee to meet on Thursday next, at half-past Three o'clock, and to appoint their own Chairman.
