HL Deb 26 August 1907 vol 182 c111

Commons Amendments to Lords Amendments considered.

THE EARL OF DONOUGHMORE

said that in moving to agree with the Commons Amendments he thought it only right that he should explain exactly why they had come back to them. The Government made two Amendments in the Bill, and they were unfortunately found when they got to the House of Commons to be a breach of privilege. The House of Commons re-inserted the Amendments as their Amendments and now asked their Lordships to agree with them. He need not say that he heartily desired that their Lordships should agree with them, but he would perhaps be allowed to express the hope that as they found that even such infallible people as His Majesty's Government unfortunately made such mistakes, they would remember it when less fallible people made mistakes and try and treat them with the same mercy as they themselves had been treated by the House of Commons.

Moved, "That this House doth agree with the Commons in the said Amendments."—(Earl of Donoughmore.)
