HL Deb 22 May 1900 vol 83 cc859-60
THE EARL OF KIMBERLEY

Seeing the noble Marquess in his place, I should like to ask if he could tell us when and for how long he proposes to adjourn for the Whitsuntide recess.

THE PRIME MINISTER AND SECRETARY OF STATE FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS (The Marquess of SALISBURY)

I had originally proposed to adjourn on Monday for a fortnight, but it has since come to my knowledge that the House of Commons have arranged to adjourn for sixteen days. It. would be intolerable that this House should have to acknowledge inferiority to the House of Commons in this respect, and I therefore submit to your Lordships that an adjournment to Monday three weeks would he a reasonable arrangement, especially as there are certain great popular assemblages that would interfere with the transaction, of business.

THE EARL OF KIMBERLEY

I quite agree with the noble Marquess. It has always been the privilege of this House to have three or four more days holiday than the House of Commons.
