HL Deb 14 February 1831 vol 2 c466
The Duke of Norfolk

presented a Petition from the town of Sheffield, praying for Parliamentary Reform. The noble Duke said, the petition was entitled to attention from their Lordships, as it came from a very extensive and populous place. The town of Sheffield contained no less than 80,000 inhabitants, and was distinguished by the extent of its trade and manufactures, and by the many valuable local institutions which it possessed. It was a place which ought no longer to be left unrepresented, especially considering that many towns of much less importance enjoyed the elective franchise.—Petition laid on the Table.
