HC Deb 08 May 1922 vol 153 c1798
73. Sir C. YATE

asked the Under-Secretary of State for India what is the present state of affairs in the Champaran district of Behar; and what steps have been taken by the Behar Provincial Government for the protection of British planters and their families in that district and the payment of compensation to them and others for property destroyed by the mobs?

Earl WINTERTON

The latest reports received indicate that peaceful conditions prevail in Chumparun. Additional police have been for some time past quartered in the areas formerly disturbed. In the one case in which compensation is known to have been claimed, the demand was excessive, and orders for its collection were delayed by the necessity of making a proper valuation.
