§ 19. Sir J. NORTON-GRIFFITHSasked the Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs what is the authority under which the British gendarmerie in Palestine will exercise its functions, having regard to the fact that the Treaty of Sevres, which 1541 authorised the placing of Palestine under a mandate, has not yet been ratified; and if he will say generally what is the present position of this country with regard to the mandate for Palestine?
Mr. WOODThe British gendarmerie exercise their functions under the authority of the Palestine Government. The non-ratification of the Treaty of Sevres does not absolve the Palestine Government from the duty of maintaining order. As regards the mandate, I would refer the hon. Member to the answer given to my Noble Friend the Member for Hitchin on the 10th of April.
