HC Deb 02 May 1922 vol 153 cc1150-1
43. Major MACKENZIE WOOD

asked the Minister of Agriculture whether he has taken the opinion of the Law Officers of the Crown as to the effect of the passing of the Irish Free State Act on the question of the importation into Great Britain of store cattle; if so, what is their opinion; and whether he proposes taking any further action in the matter?

The MINISTER of AGRICULTURE (Sir Arthur Boscawen)

I am advised that the expression "United Kingdom" in the definition of the word "foreign" in the Diseases of Animals Act, 1894, means the territory comprised in what was the United Kingdom at the time of the passing of the Act and that consequently animals from the Irish Free State are not foreign animals for the purposes of the Act. It will probably be desirable, however, to remove any possible doubt by including a provision on the subject in a Bill dealing with the Irish question
