HC Deb 23 March 1922 vol 152 c655
30. Colonel NEWMAN

asked the Prime Minister whether his attention has been called to two pamphlets which are being sent to this country, entitled "England's War Guilt and the Monstrous Lie," written by the Rev. O. Hartwich, minister at the Bremen Cathedral, and president of the German Save-the-Honour League, and distributed free of charge by the Volks-bund Rettet die Ehre, 13, Wielandstrasse, Bremen; and will he make representations to the German Government on the subject?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

The answer to the first part of the question is in the affirmative. There is no evidence to show that the German Government are responsible for the free distribution of these pamphlets. Should any evidence to that effect be forthcoming, the advisability of making representations to the German Government on the subject will be considered.

Colonel NEWMAN

Is it not the fact that, while no part of this question alleges that the German Government are doing this, they are the lever for doing it, and could not the right hon. Gentleman drop a hint in the proper quarter that these pamphlets are creating bad feeling in this country?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

I could not hear what the hon. and gallant Member said.
