70. Sir J. D. REESasked the Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs 1773 whether the Foreign Office has any official information regarding the provision of a Mahommedan mosque and institute in Paris; and, if not, whether he will obtain such in view to similar provision being made, so soon as financial conditions allow, in the capital of the British Empire, the Mahommedan subjects of which are four times as numerous as those of the French Republic?
§ Mr. CECIL HARMSWORTHHis Majesty's Government have no information which has not been reported in the Press. I would remind my hon. Friend that there are several mosques in this country.
§ Mr. HARMSWORTHIf that be so, I do not think it would be a matter for public expenditure.
Sir J. D. REESIs my hon. Friend aware that I only asked him to inquire what is happening in France? Will he inquire? It might be a useful precedent.
§ Mr. HARMSWORTHYes, Sir, I shall be very happy to inquire.
