HC Deb 13 March 1922 vol 151 cc1772-3
70. Sir J. D. REES

asked the Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether the Foreign Office has any official information regarding the provision of a Mahommedan mosque and institute in Paris; and, if not, whether he will obtain such in view to similar provision being made, so soon as financial conditions allow, in the capital of the British Empire, the Mahommedan subjects of which are four times as numerous as those of the French Republic?

Mr. CECIL HARMSWORTH

His Majesty's Government have no information which has not been reported in the Press. I would remind my hon. Friend that there are several mosques in this country.

Sir J. D. REES

May I ask my hon. Friend whether he does not think there is room for one more?

Mr. HARMSWORTH

If that be so, I do not think it would be a matter for public expenditure.

Sir J. D. REES

Is my hon. Friend aware that I only asked him to inquire what is happening in France? Will he inquire? It might be a useful precedent.

Mr. HARMSWORTH

Yes, Sir, I shall be very happy to inquire.
