HC Deb 13 March 1922 vol 151 c1773
75. Mr. L. MALONE

asked the Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether, in view of the fact that His Majesty's Government have spent £1,100,000 on the relief of Russian political refugees and is still spending considerable sums on their behalf, the Government will allocate a sum for the relief of the Hungarian political refugees, who have escaped from the Hungarian white terror and are living in wretched conditions, mostly in Vienna, and thereby assist the Austrian Government, whose critical position makes this additional burden extremely difficult to bear?

Mr. HARMSWORTH

His Majesty's Government are under no kind of obligation to assist Hungarian political refugees, to whom no undertakings have ever at any time been given. They would not, therefore, be justified in devoting any public funds to their assistance.
