HC Deb 01 March 1922 vol 151 cc359-60
18. Mr. RENDALL

asked the Minister of Labour whether a married woman doing part-time domestic work and earning 10s. per week thereat will receive the 5s. unemployment benefit if and because her husband is out of work if she gives up her employment though offered a continuance of it?

Dr. MACNAMARA

Under the Dependants' Grants Act, a grant is not payable in respect of a wife if she is in regular wage-earning employment. Whether the grant would be payable in the circumstances described in the question would depend on all the circumstances of the case. If, however, the employment is given up merely in order that the grant may be claimed, that would be a matter which the Local Employment Committee would take into consideration, and would be a proper ground for refusing a grant.
