§ 49. Mr. HOGGEasked the Prime Minister whether M. Clemenceau presented memoranda in favour of permanent occupation of the left bank of the Rhine at the Peace Conference at Paris on 26th February, 1919; and whether he pressed the same claim at a meeting with President Wilson and the Prime Minister on 14th March, 1919?
Mr. CHAMBERLAIN (Leader of the House)In view of the publication abroad of proceedings of the Peace Conference, the Government are considering the desirability of issuing a Blue Book on the subject.
§ Mr. HOGGEDoes that mean that the right hon. Gentleman is unable to tell us that M. Clemenceau did present the memorandum?
Mr. CHAMBERLAINIt means exactly what I have said. Pending a decision, I prefer to make no statement whatever.
§ Mr. HOGGEIs the right hon. Gentleman aware that the Prime Minister has denied that that was done in this House, and can the right hon. Gentleman say why, when we ask if it was done, we are put off with such an answer?
Mr. CHAMBERLAINI do not think the hon. Member correctly quotes the Prime Minister. I am certain that if he does correctly quote the Prime Minister he will find that what he said is accurate.
