HC Deb 09 February 1922 vol 150 cc303-4
69. Mr. STANTON

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he is aware of the unrest and growing hostility to the Government for its continuance of the exorbitant tax on workmen's clubs both in licensing and the cost of beer; is he aware that the tax upon the barrel of beer, which was 7s. 9d. in 1914, is now fixed at £5 per barrel, or an increase of 13 times; is he aware that 90 per cent. of the working class drink beer in moderation and with no abuse; and will he consider the removal or part removal of this tax in proportion to the drop in wages and unemployment at the present time?

Sir R. HORNE

I am aware that representations have been made in the sense mentioned by the hon. Member, but I am unable to anticipate the Budget proposals on this matter.

Mr. MILLS

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that this is a tax upon a tax?

Sir R. HORNE

That was argued on the Finance Bill last year.

Mr. MILLS

We claim the right to keep on arguing it.
