HC Deb 30 May 1921 vol 142 cc598-9
Mr. ORMSBY-GORE

I desire, Mr. Speaker, to bring to your notice that in the OFFICIAL REPORT of the Division that took place in the House on Friday last, on the Motion of my right hon. Friend the Member for the Gorbals Division of Glasgow (Mr. Barnes), the figures are given as 69 and 109. These were the figures announced at the Table, but there are in the one case only 107, instead of 109, names given in the OFFICIAL REPORT.

Mr. MILLS

How many were members of the Government?

Mr. ORMSBY-GORE

There were 69 on the other side, so that the Tellers were included in the figures for the Government, and not included in the figures against the Government.

Mr. SPEAKER

I am afraid there is sometimes a slight discrepancy between the figures given by the Tellers and the names appearing in the OFFICIAL REPORT. That can only be corrected if the Tellers agree that they have made an error. We are bound to take the arithmetic of the Tellers when they come to the Table. That is the authority on which the Chair must act, until, at any rate, the Tellers come and ask that the figures may be corrected.

Mr. ORMSBY-GORE

May an instruction be given to whoever checks this list of Members to go over the list again and see if any names have been omitted?

Mr. SPEAKER

The Tellers are the persons responsible to the House for the figures.
