HC Deb 26 May 1921 vol 142 c303
34. Lieut.-Commander KENWORTHY

asked the Prime Minister whether he will consider suspending the provisions of the Increase of Rent and Mortgage Interest (Restrictions) Act, 1920, which enable landlords to increase the rents of working-class houses by an additional 10 per cent. in July next, until trade and industry recovers from the present depression and the consequent unemployment is lessened?

The PRIME MINISTER

No, Sir; the Government cannot undertake to introduce legislation for this purpose. In our opinion legislation of this character could only still further delay the return to normal conditions.

Lieut.-Commander KENWORTHY

Does not the Prime Minister see that the position is more disadvantageous to the country than at any period during the War, and that these unemployed people are very hard hit by these increases of rent?

Mr. R. RICHARDSON

Will the right hon. Gentleman give facilities for the passing of the little Bill that is before the House on this very important matter?
