HC Deb 15 June 1921 vol 143 cc399-400
62. Major PRESCOTT

asked the Minister of Health to what extent he has authorised the cutting down of the State housing scheme since he took office; whether he will give his reasons for taking such action; and if he will give the total liability to be borne by the State and local authorities for the acquisition of land, the construction of roads and sewers, architects' and quantity surveyors' fees, and contractors' compensation in connection with abandoned schemes?

Sir A. MOND

In view of the altered economic and financial circumstances of the country, I have felt compelled to take steps to limit the provision of new houses to the minimum requirements, and I am reviewing the general housing demand in this light. I cannot at present estimate the liability which may be incurred in connection with abandoned schemes.

Mr. MILLS

What authority does the right hon. Gentleman consult in order to find out whether the need actually exists?

Sir A. MOND

I consult the local authorities, but mostly I have to consult the national financial position.

Lieut.-Colonel CROFT

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that there are several places in this country where houses have been built and where no tenants can be found to occupy them; and will he take great care that that does not occur in any schemes in future?

Mr. MILLS

Is that not due to the fact that the cost per week runs to about 50 per cent. of the wages of the people who are asked to occupy them?

Mr. SPEAKER

That is not a question; it is an argument.
