HC Deb 17 February 1921 vol 138 cc267-8
44. Mr. BOTTOM LEY

asked the Prime Minister whether, in accordance with Article 246 of Section 2 of the Treaty of Peace between the Allied and Associated Powers and Germany, Germany has yet handed over to His Britannic Majesty's Government the skull of the Sultan Mkwawa?

Mr. HARMSWORTH

The answer is in the negative. The Governor of the Tanganyika Territory is endeavouring to obtain confirmation of a statement, which has been made by the German Government, that this skull was not taken to Germany, but buried locally.

Mr. BOTTOMLEY

If the skull does arrive in this country, can it be exhibited in the Tea Room, so that hon. Members may compare it with the skulls of some of His Majesty's Ministers?

Mr. HARMSWORTH

I hope the hon. Member will not jest about this matter, because it is regarded with much sentiment by some of the tribes in East Africa.
