HC Deb 26 October 1920 vol 133 cc1527-8
11. Colonel YATE

asked the Secretary of State for War whether, considering that he has already decided that officers of the Army and Royal Air Force interned during the War were entitled to continue to draw field allowances if they were already in receipt of the allowance at the time of internment, he will treat the officers of the Indian Army in an equal manner and direct that during the time they were prisoners of war they were entitled to draw the allawances in full which they were in receipt of at the time they were taken prisoners?

Sir A. WILLIAMSON

The question of the emoluments of Indian Army officers while prisoners of war had received very full consideration, and there is no intention to vary the decisions that have already been applied.

Colonel YATE

Is it the policy of the War Office to rob the officers of the Indian Army simply because they belong to an army that is far, far away and cannot defend themselves?

Sir A. WILLIAMSON

No. The pay is in accordance with the standing rule. The hon. Gentleman has asked questions on the subject before and has had very full replies, and I cannot add anything to them.

Colonel YATE

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware than my questions on behalf of the officers of the Indian Army have shown more and more that they are being unjustly deprived of their pay, and that they ought to be treated on equal terms with the British Army.
