HC Deb 21 October 1920 vol 133 cc1069-70
39. Mr. WATERSON

asked the Prime Minister whether he is aware of the hard- ship of pensioners owing to the increased cost of living; and if he will say when it is expected that the increases of pensions will be made, as passed by this House under the Pensions (Increase) Act, 1920.

The FINANCIAL SECRETARY to the TREASURY (Mr. Baldwin)

In a number of cases increases under the Pensions (Increase) Act, 1920, are already in course of payment. The assessments and payments of increases under the Act are being made as quickly as possible, but owing to the large number of cases involved the work will of necessity extend over some weeks.

Mr. WATERSON

Seeing that this Act applies from 1st April this year, is the hon. Gentleman aware that a great many people are suffering hardship by the delay; and has the inquisitorial form which has been issued been sent out with the sanction of His Majesty's Government?
