HC Deb 24 November 1920 vol 135 c429
41. Major O'NEILL

asked the Minister of Health whether he anticipates that the whole of the money allocated for the Payment of grants to private builders under the Housing (Additional Powers) Act, 1919, will be required by reason of the proposed extension of the time within which those grants are payable?

Dr. ADDISON

If certificates are granted by local authorities during the proposed period at the same rate as in the past three months, and the houses for which certificates are issued are completed, there is little doubt that the grants would approximate to The maximum authorised.

Mr. W. THORNE

May I ask if these grants to private builders have been the means of reducing rents in different parts of the country?

Dr. ADDISON

I cannot say, but they have undoubtedly provided more houses.
