HC Deb 16 November 1998 vol 319 c365W
Mr. Hoyle

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer (1) what representations his Department has received on the cost to the Exchequer in lost revenue of the resale of petrol imported into the UK via the Republic of Ireland; [59465]

(2) what representations his Department has received on the cost to the Exchequer in lost revenue by petrol smuggling from the Republic of Ireland; and what evaluation he has made of them. [59463]

Ms Hewitt

[holding answer 12 November 1998]: The Chancellor has not received any representations specifically about smuggling of petrol from the Republic of Ireland into the UK. However, he has received representations about the level of smuggling of diesel from the Republic of Ireland into Northern Ireland.

HM Customs and Excise have no official estimates for the revenue lost to the Exchequer through such activity.
