HL Deb 19 April 1989 vol 506 c861WA
Lord Avebury

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What reports they have received concerning the massacre of inhabitants of the village of Talangsari III in central Lampung, Sumatra on 6th February by commandos of the Indonesian army's Kopassua Corps, and whether they will support the demand by the Institute for Legal Justice and other lawyers in Indonesia for an independent inquiry into the massacre at the next meeting of the United Nations Human Rights Commission.

The Minister of State for Defence Procurement (Lord Trefgarne)

There are confused reports about the incident at Lampung, which we understand was precipitated by an attack on the security forces in which a soldier was killed. We are naturally concerned at any loss of life in such incidents. We shall consider our position for the next meeting of the United Nations Human Rights Commission nearer the time.
