HL Deb 19 April 1989 vol 506 c861WA
Lord Avebury

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they have seen extracts from the memoirs of President Suharto published in the Indonesian press, in which the president admitted that thousands of "mysterious killings" perpetrated in 1983 and 1984 were committed by persons acting under the orders of the state, and whether they will draw these extracts to the attention of the next meeting of the United Nations Human Rights Commission.

Lord Trefgarne

President Suharto's autobiography was published on 30th March in the Indonesian language. Our understanding is that, while it seeks to justify the killings, it does not state that they were committed by persons acting under the orders of the state. We shall consider our position for the next meeting of the United Nations Human Rights Commission nearer the time.
