asked the Secretary of State for Defence if he will list the various batches of houses and other types of accommodation originally built for Service men or their families within the Epping Forest area which have been sold or transferred to Epping Forest district council over the course of the last five years, indicating in each case the date of transfer and the terms on which this took place.

The following houses and other types of accommodation originally built for Service men or their families within the Epping Forest area have been sold to Epping Forest district council in the period from April 1974:

Property and Date of Completion of Sale

  • Former Officers Mess and Grounds, North Weald—25 March 1977.
  • Leader Lodge, North Weald—6 January 1978.
  • 5 Married Quarters at Beamish Close, North Weald—30 March 1978.
  • 33 Married Quarters at Turnpike Way, North Weald—31 March 1978.

In all cases the freehold interest was sold to the council.

asked the Secretary of State for Defence what accommodation originally built within the Epping Forest area for the housing of Service men or their families is still retained by his Department; and whether any further transfers of property to Epping Forest district council are anticipated.

The Ministry of Defence now has 14 married quarters at North Weald in the Epping Forest area for occupation by Service men and their families. At present 154 surplus married

The number of male officers who have applied to leave the Services prematurely in each quarter of 1978–79 are as follows:

quarters are under offer to the Epping Forest district council. One further quarter is likely to be offered to them shortly.

asked the Secretary of State for Defence what co-operation has taken place between his Department and Epping Forest district council in rehousing Service men completing their term of service within the Epping Forest district over the course of recent years.

I refer the hon. Member to the answer given him on 24th July 1978.—[Official Report, Vol. 954, c. 608–9.] Although there has been no change of policy, I am informed that Epping Forest district council now considers each case on its merits and that over the past 15 months eight ex-Service families have been housed in permanent accommodation by the council.
