Mr. Kilfedder

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs whether he will take steps to ensure that any elections held in the United Kingdom under Article 138(3) of the Treaty of Rome will not take place on a Sunday.

Mr. Rippon

Under Article 138(3) of the European Economic Community Treaty we shall have full opportunity for expressing our views both in the Assembly and in the Council of Ministers on the procedure for elections.

The Article requires that the Council shall act unanimously and that its recommendation to Member States shall be for adoption in accordance with their respective constitutional requirements.
