asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether any statistics are available for the Greater London Area:

  1. 1. of the total number of persons under thirty years old seeking treatment during the last three years at venereal disease clinics;
  2. 2. of the number of such persons seeking such treatment in each year, giving separate figures for each sex; and
  3. 3. of the number of patients under treatment for venereal disease who are registered drug addicts.

LORD ABERDARE

The number of new cases of venereal disease (syphilis, gonorrhoea and chancroid) dealt with in clinics in the Greater London Area in 1968,1969 and 1970 were:

  • 196821,378 (16,115 male,5,263 female)
  • 1969 23,748 (17,718 male,6,030 female)
  • 1970 24,576 (18,066 male,6,510 female)
  • Total: 69,702 (51,899 male.17,803 female)

The corresponding figures for non-gonococcal urethritis (males only) which is not statutorily defined as a venereal disease but which is sexually transmitted, were:

1968 17,948
1969 21,135
1970 25,158
Total 64,241

Information is not available on the number of persons under thirty years of age seeking treatment for venereal disease nor on the number of patients under treatment for venereal disease who are registered drug addicts; but information on the number of persons under 25 years who attended clinics in the Greater London Area for treatment of gonorrhoea or primary or secondary syphilis in 1968,1969 and 1970 is available and shows:

  • 1968 9,304 (6,254 male, 3,050 female)
  • 1969 10,633 (6,870 male, 3,763 female)
  • 1970 11.256 (6,974 male, 4,282 female)
  • Total 31,193 (20,098 male, 11,095 female)
