HL Deb 18 October 1990 vol 522 cc1125-6

30 Schedule 3, page 32, line 8, at end insert: `(4) Any consent required by this paragraph is in addition to any consent that may be required by paragraph 5 above.'.

The Lord Chancellor

My Lords, I beg to move that the House do agree with the Commons in their Amendment No. 30.

This is a drafting amendment. Schedule 3 of the Bill provides that a person's consent is required before his gametes are used for the treatment of others. It also provides that the consent of each donor is required before an embryo is created in vitro, to the use for which the embryo is intended. Their consent is also required to the actual use of the embryo for that purpose. This amendment provides, lest there be any ambiguity, that the required consent to in vitro fertilisation and the subsequent use of the embryo is in addition to, and not an alternative to, consent to the use of the gametes.

Moved, That the House do agree with the Commons in their Amendment No. 30..(The Lord Chancellor.)

On Question, Motion agreed to.
