HL Deb 04 May 1948 vol 155 c612

3.4 p.m.

Order of the Day for the House to be put into Committee read.

Moved, That the House do now resolve itself into Committee.—(Lord Henderson.)

On Question, Motion agreed to.

House in Committee accordingly:

[The EARL OF DROGHEDA in the Chair.]

Clauses 1 to 10 agreed to.

Clause 11 [Amendments of Part II (Safety)]:

LORD HENDERSON

On behalf of my noble friend, I beg to move this drafting Amendment to Clause 11 (1) of the Bill, which is intended to cure a defect in the provisions of the Act of 1937 about landing gates. The object of the Amendment is to make it clear that the gates referred to in line 25 are landing gates, whereas the words "every gate" might be misunderstood to include other gates—for instance, lift cage gates—and that is not intended to be so. I beg to move.

Amendment moved— Page 8, line 25, leave out ("every gate") and insert ("any such gate as aforesaid").— (Lord Henderson.)

LORD LLEWELLIN

This Amendment obviously makes the intention much clearer, and it affords me the opportunity of saying how glad we are to speed this Bill on its way.

On Question, Amendment agreed to.

Clause 11, as amended, agreed to.

Remaining clauses and Schedules agreed to.

House resumed.
