HC Deb 23 February 1995 vol 255 cc582-3

10 pm

Mr. David Alton (Liverpool, Mossley Hill)

I wish to present a petition with more than 19,000 signatures collected by the Movement for Christian Democracy. The signatures are in addition to those that have already been submitted to the House by many right hon. and hon. Members from all parties.

The petition concerns the scandal of overseas aid funds being given to organisations which in turn fund the appalling and abusive Chinese population control programme, which involves forced contraception, forced sterilisation and forcible abortions for Chinese women. The petition reads: To the Honourable the Commons of the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland in Parliament assembled. The Humble petition of the citizens of the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland Sheweth That the UNFPA (United Nations Population Fund) and the IPPF (International Planned Parenthood Federation) receive money from the Overseas Aid Budget and in turn support the Chinese Population Control Programme which abuses the human rights of the people of China through forced contraception, sterilisation and abortion leading to infanticide and physical damage to women. Wherefore your petitioners pray that your honourable House will ensure that no further funds from the Overseas Aid budget are disbursed to the UNFPA and IPPF while these organisations support, encourage, or act as apologists for the Chinese Population Control Programme. And your petitioners, as in duty bound, will ever pray.

To lie upon the Table.
