HC Deb 04 November 1970 vol 805 c1084
47. Mr. Wall

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will now make a statement on the programme for the new Hull-Beverley trunk road and South-West Beverley bypass.

Mr. Michael Heseltine

A single carriageway design is being prepared to the stage where a firm date for start of work can be decided, provided the scheme justifies a place in the firm programme.

Mr. Wall

Will my hon. Friend bear in mind that this road has been planned since 1927? It is now very urgent. Will he give it priority in his programme?

Mr. Heseltine

I realise the concern of my hon. Friend for this road and the work that he has done on it. But it has had to be redesigned, and we are waiting for further essential information.

Mr. McNamara

Is the hon. Gentleman aware of the increasing pressures which are now put upon that new road, particularly because of new private and council housing development on large estates on either side? There is considerable concern about the way in which the dual carriageway peters out into a single lane. With the heavy increase in private traffic, it is becoming a danger to all users.

Mr. Heseltine

I am sure that the hon. Gentleman knows that the single carriageway proposals being considered are acceptable to the county council.
