asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer when he will introduce legislation to abolish selective employment tax.

Proposals for the abolition of S.E.T. will be laid before the House at the appropriate time.

Mr. McNamara

When does the right hon. Gentleman expect the appropriate time to be? When it is the appropriate time, may we expect it to be accompanied by further slashing cuts in social benefits such as those announced recently?

Mr. Barber

The hon. Gentleman will have to wait for the announcement.

Will my right hon. Friend abolish the payment of selective employment tax in respect of apprentices in the building industry in order to improve the Labour Government's disgraceful building record?

I am always happy to consider proposals from my hon. Friend, and I will bear in mind what he says.
