HC Deb 20 April 1967 vol 745 cc788-9
18. Mr. Longden

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science whether he will institute a national scale of payment of part-time teachers in maintained primary and second schools.

Mrs. Shirley Williams

This is a matter for the Burnham Committee, which I understand has been considering it.

Mr. Longden

I am glad to hear that Answer, but is it not the case that these salaries are now fixed by local education authorities in a different way in each area? Would it not help very much if there was a national scale?

Mrs. Williams

This is exactly the matter that is being considered by a working party—[Interruption.]

Mr. Speaker

Order. It is not the hon. Lady to whom the House was taking objection.

Mrs. Williams

—since the last Burnham negotiations. The working party will be reporting shortly, with specific reference to the determination of part-time salaries.
