HC Deb 20 March 1958 vol 584 c1418
29. Mr. Sorensen

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies how many hospitals for mental illness and infectious diseases there are in the South Cameroons; how many training centres exist in that area for medical practitioners, pharmacists, health inspectors and others engaged in medical, health or nursing services; and what steps are being taken to meet more adequately the need for hospital, medical and nursing services in the area.

Mr. Profumo

I have asked the Governor-General of the Federation of Nigeria about this and will write to the hon. Member when I receive a reply.

Mr. Sorensen

Has any attempt been made to draw the attention of the authorities there to the quite inadequate medical and similar facilities with a view to meeting these needs?

Mr. Profumo

The medical facilities which exist there are being improved as time goes on. A grant of £139,000 from C.D. and W. funds towards the cost of development of medical and health services in the Southern Cameroons during the period 1955–60 was approved during 1955–56.
