asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies the number of co-operative societies in the Colonies, their membership and owned funds in 1951 and 1956, respectively.

In 1951 there were 3,799 societies with 426,000 members. Their owned funds—paid up share capital and reserves—amounted to £2,682,000 or £6 5s. per member. In 1956 there were 7,844 societies with 1,022,000 members. Their owned funds amounted to £12,220,000 or £11 16s. per member.
