HC Deb 31 October 1957 vol 575 c383
30. Mr. Biggs-Davison

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies how many British officials in Cyprus are proficient in Greek, in Turkish and in both languages; and how many are proficient in neither.

Mr. Profumo

Of the British officials required by Cyprus General Orders to pass language examinations. 54 have passed in Greek, 10 in Turkish, and 7 in both languages. Exact information is not available about those officers not required to pass examinations, but many are known to be reasonably proficient in one or other language.
